A bubble column only grows through water source blocks: the first flowing block ends it. One bucket at the top only gives flowing water, so the kelp turns every block into a source, and breaking the lowest kelp pops the rest and leaves the sources behind. Kelp and seagrass will not stand on magma, so the magma goes in last. Tested in Java 26.3: 10 blocks up in 0.9 seconds, down in 2 seconds, and you never run out of air inside a bubble column. At the top the bubbles throw you a little over the edge: step onto the cliff. At the bottom of the down shaft the magma hurts (1 heart a second, unless you sneak), so walk straight out. Doors hold the water in whether they are open or shut. No cliff?
